How to send a blank-looking message on Discord

If you are trying to “type nothing in Discord,” the useful distinction is between an empty input and input that may render blank. The options above supply actual text. Neither one hides your identity or changes your account name.

Desktop or browser

1. Copy one candidate. Choose the Unicode character or the Markdown sequence above. The manual field is available if browser clipboard access is blocked.
2. Choose the message field. Open a channel where you can appropriately test a message. Paste with Ctrl+V on Windows or Cmd+V on Mac. Do not paste into search, a nickname editor or a code block.
3. Send once and inspect the result. Press Enter when you intend to send. Check the message in the chat rather than treating an empty-looking composer as success. If it is rejected or displays visible characters, use the symptom checks below.

iPhone or Android

Copy in your phone’s browser, switch to Discord and tap the intended message field. Use the keyboard or long-press Paste command, then tap the app’s send control. Keyboard menus vary. If Paste is unavailable, recopy the candidate and use the local check below to see whether it reached your clipboard.

These are input steps, not a promise of acceptance on every client. We have not sent a test message from a current Discord account. Avoid repeating failed submissions; a server can have its own message rules.

Unicode character vs. the underscore method

The Unicode option copies one Hangul Filler. It is a blank-looking character, not formatting wrapped around a word. Its appearance can depend on the font or app, and the receiving field can remove or reject it. Unicode documents the character; it does not specify Discord’s acceptance rules.

The Markdown option copies exactly _ _: underscore, ordinary space, underscore. You can also type those three characters yourself. No backticks or quotation marks should be included. Discord documents underscores as an italic formatting marker, but does not guarantee that a space-only formatted message will remain supported.

The blank-message use of _ _ comes from older community reports, which also include unsuccessful attempts. Treat it as a method to check in your client, not a current compatibility guarantee. Copy Paste Dump likewise lists Unicode and Markdown alternatives.

What does “blank” mean to the recipient?

The intended result is a message with no visible body text. It is still a message associated with its sender; it does not make the account anonymous, erase the message record or guarantee silent delivery. This page cannot preview another Discord client’s rendered result.

If your blank Discord message does not work

Nothing is pasted, or the composer still treats it as empty

Paste into the local check below. Zero code points means there is no text to inspect. An exact U+3164 or _ _ match confirms the candidate reached this page; it does not prove Discord retained it. Recopy once before investigating the receiving field.

The underscores appear as visible text

Check for backticks, extra punctuation or a code block around _ _. The copied sequence should be U+005F → U+0020 → U+005F. If the exact sequence remains visible after sending, that client is not producing the intended blank result. Try the separate Unicode candidate rather than adding more formatting marks.

A square or another symbol appears

Confirm the code point first. If it is U+3164, the receiving app or font may be drawing a visible glyph. A correct copy and an invisible rendering are separate outcomes. A local preview cannot certify how another person’s device will display it.

The message is rejected or later disappears

Read Discord’s error and check whether ordinary messages can be sent there. A permissions issue, connection problem, field validation or moderation action may produce different failures. Disappearance by itself does not identify a bot or filter. Follow the channel’s rules rather than cycling through characters to evade them.

Blank messages, hidden words and blank names are different

Hide real words with a spoiler

If you want the reader to reveal a sentence, use Discord’s spoiler feature: wrap the actual words in ||your text||. A spoiler retains readable content and can be revealed by the reader; it is not an empty message. See Discord’s official spoiler instructions. Spoiler syntax inside a code block does not hide the text.

Add spacing inside a longer message

A blank line between paragraphs is a layout task, not a standalone blank message. Keep the words and line breaks you want together in one draft. On desktop, Shift+Enter is commonly used to insert a new line instead of sending. Check your client’s editor behavior before posting a longer draft.

Make a nickname or username look blank

That is a different field with different validation. A successful message does not establish that a username, display name or server nickname can store the same characters. This page’s copy options are not a tested naming method.
